A business will use advertising in order to promote a product, service, or event to their target audience. The target audience refers to the subset of the general public that their products, services, or events were created for in order to meet the needs or wishes of the market.

Some of the channels that the advertising will be focused on include Internet, print, broadcast, outdoor, and point of sale. Point of sale advertising is located inside the store and commonly are made up of large cardboard displays where they are stocked. Their intention is to focus your attention on their products, as well as to entice you to buy a product that you may not have been thinking about. They are trying to generate an impulse sale, which is why they are commonly large and attention grabbing. All advertising is designed to illicit a response from the viewer of the ad. Part of advertising is to educate the consumer about your product, but even more important, you are trying to generate a sense of urgency with your potential customer in order to get them to purchase your product.
