Sugar is mainly used for sweetening food. Its main source are sugar beet and sugar cane extractions. The sugar found in food is called sucrose, while other types of sugar utilized in the preparation of industrial foods are known as fructose and glucose.
Sugar beet and sugar cane are the best natural sources of sugar which requires refining and additional processing in order to arrive at the final products, such as brown sugar, table sugar, and powdered sugar.
On the other hand, sugar can be obtained without the need for further processing. It can be found in various natural foods. These are the following:
• Fruits – Some fruits contain high sugar content like grapes, tangerines, bananas, pineapples, pears, grapefruits, and oranges. Pineapple, for instance, has a 66 Glycemic Index (GI) and natural sugar content of 16 grams for every one cup.
• Honey – This is the best known natural sweetener being widely used ever since. Each tablespoon of honey has a sugar content of 16 grams. This is also commonly used in treating sore throats, as well as in boosting energy.
• Agave nectar – This can be obtained from the plant agave. Despite being popular as the main source of the alcoholic drink tequila, agave is proven to be non-alcoholic with high natural sugar content.
• Milk and milk products – One cup of low-fat milk or whole milk is full of high natural sugar contents. Sherbets, cheese, and low-fat yogurt also has 4-6 grams of natural sugar.
